How to Become A Nurse Practitioner: In the medical field, the demand of nurse practitioners are increasingly high. So, if you are interested in becoming a nurse practitioner (NP), you may be wondering, “” How long it takes to complete the school in order to become a nurse practitioner?” A nurse practitioner begins as a registered nurse (RN) and then moves on to get a master’s or a doctoral degree.

The most common questions asked by students “How much does it cost to become a nurse practitioner?”The cost of a nursing program varies from state to state, or depends on where you are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate school and whether you have earned your Doctor of Nursing Practice degree or not.

What is a Nurse Practitioner (NP)?

A Nurse Practitioner is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) that has completed the required nurse practitioner schooling i.e.  Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). They can perform many of the same functions as doctors.

How to Become A Nurse Practitioner

If you want to make a career as a nurse practitioner, here is steps to become a nurse practitioner –

1. Become A Registered Nurse:-

The first step to becoming a nurse practitioner is to become a registered nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) work with different patient populations. After graduation you can become a registered nurse by completing  either an associate or bachelor’s degree program in nursing from an accredited institution of higher education. 

2. Get BSN Degree:-

If you don’t have any bachelor’s degree, you ca enroll for a Bachelor’s in Nursing Science degree. If you have ADN degree, then you can enroll in accelerated RN-BSN programs, many of which can be completed online. However,  if you want to skip the step of earning your Bachelor’s degree, you can go with ADN to an MSN program.

3. Gain Experience:-

Most graduate programs required about 1-2 years of clinical experience before admission. Some believe that going straight through nursing school to the master’s level is the most efficient option, while others believe in gaining a nursing experience. You need a minimum of two years of experience to become a nurse practitioner.

4. Get A Graduate Degree:-

the most common way to become a nurse practitioner for registered nurse who already have a bachelor’s degree is by earning a master’s degree. For those who don’t have a bachelor’s degree, they can choose RN-to-MSN programs. Also, they can go with ADN-to-MSN (Associate Degree in Nursing to Master’s) programs. Some institutions offer doctoral degrees, such as the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

5. Earn Advanced Practice Nursing Licensure:-

Once you have completed your advanced practice degree, you are ready to receive your license. There are several agencies that license nurses practitioners, among them American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) is a common choice. However, you can also choose a license through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
