How to become an officer in Indian air force? What is the qualification? We will discuss everything about Indian Air Force(IAF) in this article. Indian Air Force(IAF) is one of the fourth largest Air Forces in the world. 

The profession of the Air Force is very diverse and attractive. It is a dream of many youngsters to join the Indian Air Force, but many of them are unaware of how to become an officer in Indian air force? So, through this post, I will inform you how to get into Indian Air Force?

You can join Indian Air Force(IAF) in many ways. The IAF gives many chances to the students of 10th/12th/ and Graduation. However, the Air Force basically gives more priority to graduates.

There are also other options like NCC entry and University entry to join Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force has the opportunity to be involved in both technical and non-technical positions.

1.Branches in Indian Air Force

The Indian Air Force(IAF) divided eligible candidates into some Branches, like Flying Branch, Ground Duty, Ground Duty(Technical and Non-Technical).

i)Flying Branch:- 

The flying branch is mainly built with pilots. Men and Women, both can be engaged in IAF as a pilot. The main activity of the pilots is to control the fighter planes during battle time and operations. In the flying branch, three kinds of pilots available as Fighter pilot, Helicopter pilot, and Transport pilot.

ii)Ground Duty Branch:-

The main activity of the ground duty branch is to control tower and meteorological functions. The main duty of the ground duty officers is to inform the pilots about the condition of the weather. There are two different branches in the ground duty branch, the technical branch, and the non-technical branch.

The technical branch is included with aircraft and the Non-Technical branch is included with the Education, Logistics, Account, Medical, Administration, and Dental branch.

2.How to become an officer in Indian air force after 12th

Most of the students want to go in the defense line, after completing the 12th board exam. As a defense job, it makes them proud, because they can fight for the nation. But, very few aspirants know about the process of joining. So, in this post, I am going to write about how to become an officer in Indian air force after the 12th.

First step- NDA(National Defense Academy):-

National Defense Academy(NDA) released the notification for the aspirants two times a year. The written test of NDA is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC). The included syllabus in the written test is the general ability test and math.

Who is eligible? Only Indian male candidates between the ages of 16 to 19 can apply to join the Indian Air Force. Only the students who have qualified 12th board exam with Maths, Physics, and English with a minimum of 50% marks, can join the IAF.

Second step- Air Force Selection Board:-

Air Force Selection Board or AFSB is the board that selects Indian Air Force Officers. However, if you want to join Indian Air Force as an officer, you have to appear in the interview of the board. The main aim of the AFSB interview is to check your personality, physical fitness, general awareness, etc.

There are four Air Force Selection Boards(AFSB), situated in Dehradun, Gandhinagar, Mysore, and Varanasi. There are two stages of AFSB. Stage-1 is composed of OIR(Officer Intelligence Rating Test) and PPDT(Picture Perception and Discussion Test) and Stage-2 composed of Psychological test, Group Test, and Personal interview.

Third step-Medical Examination:-

One will be sent for the medical examination at Air Force Central Medical Establishment(AFCME), New Delhi, or Institute of Aviation Medicine(IAM), Bengaluru.  Candidates will be selected after three years of training at the National Defence Academy.

3.How to become an officer in Indian air force after graduation

The students who have qualified graduation can also join Indian Air Force through CDSE(Combined Defense Services Examination). The CDSE is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission two times a year.

Only Indian single male candidates between the ages of 20 to 24 can apply to the Indian Air Force. Only the students who have completed graduation in any stream from a recognized University are able to apply to IAF.

Through NCC(National Cadet Corps), one can join the flying branch in IAF. If the aspirants complete their training and get a “C’’ certificate from the Air Wing of NCC(National Cadet Corps), then they can join Indian Air Force.

Indian male and female candidates, around 20 to 24 years are eligible for NCC. Aspirants should qualify (10+2) with Math and Physic with a minimum of 60% marks, and also graduate in any stream from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks.

4.Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical) Branch

For Technical Branch candidates must give Air Force Common Aptitude Test, and for Non-Technical candidates Combined Defense Service Examination. Indian men and women are eligible for both branches.

Candidates around 20 to 26 years old, and must qualify (10+2) with Math and Physic with a minimum of 60% marks, and also graduate in any stream from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks.
